Sylhet News BD Desk: Eleven people were killed and 727 injured in 78 political violence incidents in Bangladesh in April. Most of the incidents were centered on establishing dominance, political vendetta, extortion, and occupation of various establishments. In addition, 12 people were killed in 22 incidents of mob lynching in April. At least 21 people were injured.This information was revealed in a monthly report by the human rights monitoring organization Human Rights Support Society (HRSS), which released the report on Tuesday.
The report, which highlighted the human rights situation for the month, said that the actual state of the human rights situation in April was also disappointing. Although commodity prices and Eid pilgrimages were somewhat more comfortable during the holy month of Ramadan compared to previous years, the law and order situation did not improve as expected.
The HRSS report said that at least 196 women and girls were subjected to violence in April, of which at least 88 were raped, most of whom were children under the age of 18.19 women and girls were gang-raped. Six were killed after being raped during this period.
In addition, at least 105 children were subjected to torture this month. At least 15 of them lost their lives. 90 children were subjected to physical and mental torture.
According to HRSS, at least 38 journalists were subjected to torture and harassment in at least 29 incidents last month. At least 15 journalists were injured in these incidents. In addition, 7 were subjected to insults. 5 faced threats.Three people have been arrested. In addition, 8 journalists have been charged in two cases.
In the same period, 5 people have been killed and at least 114 injured in 24 incidents of worker abuse. 11 workers have died in accidents at work due to unhealthy environment and lack of worker protection. In addition, at least 9 convicts have died in prison this month. Of these, 2 are prisoners and 7 are detainees. Two of them are involved in Awami League politics.
On the overall issue, HRSS Executive Director Ijazul Islam said that the deaths in political violence in April are worrying.Violence against women and children, and oppression of journalists have also increased comparatively. The fundamental and constitutional rights of the people must be ensured by controlling the law and order situation. Failure to do so will lead to a deterioration in the overall human rights situation in the country.
